Re-nailing
After hitting a wall on Friday, I thought about it over the week end and think I have re established my idea. I also chatted with Helen and am now re-typing and confirming everything in place.
I have found a great website full of fifties photos which is proving an excellent source for images that portray the tone I want to set.

FICTION: I have confused myself...
I changed the ending to my story which I like and I thought I had it nailed and ready. But today I go back to it and now the rest of the story is unraveling and nothing makes sense and when I change one small thing to make the end make sense, other things stop making sense and I am incredibly confused!

One day he came home and was demeaning to her and she snapped and hit him over the head. She trapped him in the house and took over his life. Eventually she realized it was too exhausting for her and she wanted to go back to dresses, cooking, cleaning and make up. Patrick however had decided he enjoyed it too much and didn't want to go back.<<
Nooow... I made the ending so that she goes out into the world and realizes women can actually have lives of their own and she goes back to confront Patrick and the story ends with her hitting Patrick with the lamb.
To do this I had to give her some background story whereby her father and then Patrick have led her to believe that only men can do something with their lives and women will always be confined to housework.
Now, I don't know how to trap him in the house to let her out because she can't hit him with the lamb twice and it's pointless if she leaves without trapping him because she may as well have done so ages ago and she needs the car which he always takes with him and has the keys for... and him having an affair seems irrelevant.
On another note, providing my story doesn't change drastically when I have managed to get my head around it, I have decided exactly how I will present my ideas (I just hope I can do it as it relies on my creativity and photoshop skills) and have been looking at actresses to play Mary. I considered Carey Mulligan before remembering she was English. I will update with these aspects later on.

Fiction
This story I found is very similar to how I want my Mary.
"My mom was born in 1933 and married in 1951, right out of high school. This fifties' advice to wives was probably a way of married life for women like my mom. At least she acted the part, although I did see a rebellious streak in her from time-to-time.
Mainly she knew how to manipulate Dad to get what she wanted. I still see that manipulation of men by women of her generation, particularly those women who remained married. Mom played to Dad's male ego to the point she might even be called "simpering."
The funny thing is, as insincere as it must have been, my dad (who is deceased) seemed to fall for the manipulation and the "simpering." Anyway, we all treated him in a manner befitting a king, tiptoeing around his "manhood," because that is what mom did. And I guess we kept his male ego at an all-time high.
My mom and dad appeared happy but I know a lot of that was because my mom sacrificed her own identity. As much as she misses dad, I sense she also feels free to be herself now."

The Text book 50's Housewife.
Have dinner ready, Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal - on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home, and the prospect of a good meal is part of this warm welcome needed.
Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so that you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.
Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.
Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Light a candle. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift, too.
Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair, and if necessary. change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.
Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, dishwasher or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Better yet, have them in bed.
Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom.

Listen to him. You may have a dozen things to tell him - the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

Fiction: A Point in Time
Looking for a year in the 50's to base my adaptation in. Looking for relevant events.
1955 - Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
"Families worked together, played together and vacationed together at family themed entertainment areas like national parks and the new Disneyland. Gender roles were strongly held, girls played with Barbie dolls and Dale Evans gear, boys with Roy Rogers and Davy Crockett paraphernalia. Drive-in movies became popular for families and teens. Cars were seen as an indicator of prosperity and cool-ness. Highways were built to take people quickly from one place to another, by-passing small towns and helping to create central marketing areas or shopping malls such as Sharpstown Mall, Gulfgate Mall and Meyerland Plaza in Houston."
1950:
Credit card system introduced in America.
1 in 7 UK families owned a car.
1951:
Rock and roll and colour TV starts in USA.
A new beauty competition: Miss World.
The still camera is given a built in flash.
1953:
McCarthy witch hunt hearings took place in USA.
1954:
US segregation made illegal in USA.
1955:
60% of Americans were in the "middle class," having incomes between $3,000 and $10,000 per year.

Although the number of women at work did continue to rise after the war, female workers and career-women were viewed with suspicion by many. The traditional idea that a woman’s role was a homemaker raising her family was very influential in 1950s USA.

Lamb to the Slaughter reference in Desperate Housewives?
This week there was a scene in Desperate Housewives that seemed very close to a scene in Lamb to the Slaughter where Patrick tells Mary he is leaving and she pretends nothing is wrong.
In Desperate Housewives, Paul kicked Beth out of the house and in the next episode she walks in the house with bags of shopping saying she would get dinner ready. She says things like "we can't be finished" "all couples argue" "everything is fine".

ALLO
Spent the afternoon in the library. Didn't find anything particularly eye catching but I know which section I am starting in next time (for fiction).
Found some books that might interest Dylan and Will for the Film Noir ideas. Particularly Dylan.

Fiction
I had this idea for my fiction adaptation in week two but the requirements of As Live pushed it aside for a while.
THE IDEA:
Alone in the house every day, she is the perfect housewife. Women aren't allowed to work and expected to care for their husbands when they come home. While her husband is at work she fantasizes.
She dresses up in his clothes and smokes cigars etc.
On day he comes home and says something sexist or demanding that flicks a switch in her brain. She flips and hits him with the lamb she was preparing.
He doesn't die.
He is knocked out and concussed. He wakes to find himself locked in the cellar wearing only his underwear. Looking around he sees a pile of neatly folded clothes. He picks them up to find they are his wife's clothes and an apron.
The wife is preparing the house so she can keep him locked away to take on her wifely duties while she takes the life she has always wanted. As him. While she gets her way she also punishes him.
He comes to accept his role and finds that he actually enjoys it.
Whereas taking on the male role exhausts her and she decides she wants to go back to how things were. He doesn't want to go back.
There are few kinks and indiscretions that I need to sort out to make it believable but I like the idea. I have collected some images and I am also working on taking some photos myself to get an idea of how I want this to look.

Roald Dahl research
Bought me some Roald Dahl books because Simon suggested we read other work by him. Turns out though that the ghost stories one isn't written by him but compiled by him and it's a book of his favourite ghost stories.
Read a few stories. Didn't think I would like them but they are really good and incredibly creepy!
Definately going to attempt the creep factor with my adaptation and think I am ready to start writing a rough script.
