As Live: Game Over!

What a week!

On Monday CAFT arrived at the scene dock with the set. Being in bits it was underwhelming but we had faith. They worked on it in the scene dock while we all worked on the paper work upstairs.

On Tuesday, Danny our lighting technician arrived and immediately got to work putting the lights up. There were so many! I wasn't expecting so many. He seemed to understand that we didn't know how to address lighting but we explained the game and I gave him my movement maps and he planned for every eventuality during the show. In the afternoon the set moved into the studio and was painted and only had a few finishing touches to complete on wednesday morning. This allowed Danny to fine tune the lighting. We had initially asked for colour but he wisely left the colour out of the lights until we had seen it against the set. It turned out that with the colours of the set (red and yellow) we didn't need coloured lights. It looked FANTASTIC! It was so amazing! I had never thought we could get a set that looked that good but CAFT pulled it all together. A few things weren't quite appropriate for television but only minor things like the buzzers and the team signs. The signs were lovely but too theatrical as we couldn't see them through the lens and the buzzers which were lights, couldn't be seen lighting up on camera. These are things we all learnt from though!

Danny also said that in the future the spacing between the panels and the background set is something to think about for lighting. Because we had the panels so close to the back of the set we had less shadows and it made the key lighting difficult. I don't know what key lighting means but I assume it's something to do with the light on the face compared to the light on the background and I guess a nice sharp, dark shadow makes the contrast easier?? No idea.

Wednesday saw the completion of the set and the arrival of Ant- our presenter! While Dean had done an excellent job filling that role for rehearsals it made it so real and pulled everything together when Ant arrived. He instantly filled the shoes of the landlord and gave it his all from go. He made great suggestions when we weren't sure on lines and he was happy and responsive to directions.
At the end of the day we rehearsed blind drunk for THE FIRST TIME! madness. It went better than I thought, adjustments had to be made but they were to be resolved the next day.
Earlier that day we had had the horror news that 2 members of the fox team had dropped out. We also lost Russell from the Dog and Gun team! Dun dun dun. However, Jane was a star and knowing the Fox well, she got her other half to fill in and some one else too. She also helped us gather more audience members for their team the next day.

THURSDAY! The big day!
In the morning I got all the cameras sorted, iris' and light balance. Positioning and briefing. Then the team members arrived with Ant. They got into costume and we were ready to rehearse at 10.30. We rehearsed Blind Drunk twice and resolved any issues. Then we went through the entire show.
Before we knew it, it was lunch time. At about 1 I went back into the gallery to get my head into the game. We were ready to go at 2! With the audience in we got started early. The first run of Twister didn't go very well. So because we had time we did it again and it went much better. Then we filmed Beer Pong which was fantastic!! The pong ball collectors did an excellent job of staying off camera after my briefing them before we started and it ran smoother than ever before!
I then got some audience shots of various reactions. They were fantastic! Considering we didn't have as many as we all imagined they sounded and looked great! And they all seemed to enjoy it which I am really happy about.
We then ran through the rest of the sequences. They went ok until the end. We had to one retake and a few pick ups and then it was OVER!

I am so proud of everyone. The first years really pulled out all the stops for the final record and it was really excellent. Our gallery team all stayed calm under pressure and it went so well!

We got GREAT responses from our professionals - Paul (sound), Danny (lights), Alastair (our go to guy) and Ant (presenter) were all really impressed and said they had seen professionals do worse jobs than we had done.

I think we managed to be really efficient! In all honesty we got this show going in much less time than we were given but we managed to create something better than we imagined. I can't wait to see the final thing!

Congratulations Dylan for a great idea which we could all work with and enjoy creating.
Thank you to Danny, Paul, Alastair and Ant.
Thank you to CATF who created an amazing set and the costumes were great too.
Thank you to all the first years, you guys were awesome and it was great to get to know you all a bit better.
Hans was invaluable. We really couldn't have done it without his insights and his help with the studio-y lingo and documentation and we couldn't have done it without his consistent positivity in us and the production.
Also of course thank you to Helen and Simon who helped us along the way.
(This is pretty much how we spent the half an hour after wrapping, thanking everyone but I wanted to reiterate thanks)

I am so exhausted!

Day in the Studio 2

Last Thursday was our second proper day in the studio. Man it was stressful!
As Director I didn't find that the morning was very successful. I felt like more was expected of me than I could manage but after a nice lunch break and a coffee we hit the afternoon with fresh enthusiasm and it went much better.

Hans and I worked out an easier way for me to handle the gallery job and it has been decided that during the games, because reaction time is quicker from eye to finger, Steve will take control of reacting to the action. I will be resizing camera shots during this time and suggest anything that needs to be seen that Steve might have missed.

After that day and some advice from Hans I pleaded with work to let me have the weekend off. There was so much to do that I just didn't envisage getting things done on time without the weekend.

So over the weekend I worked out a running order. I drew up a shot list and I drew movement plans for each sequence. It may not sound like much but I wouldn't have been able to do it in time otherwise. It took me a while to get my head around shots but I managed in the end.

Today we had a production meeting and sorted out some paperwork and cue cards!

Day in the Studio number 1

Yesterday we had our first proper experience in the studio as we had the first years to operate cameras and be our stands which meant we could all take on our assigned roles.

It was of course terrifying. Once we got rolling I felt more relaxed but still extremely anxious. Throughout the day our run throughs got better and better and hopefully that pattern will continue up until the record day.

It was great to work with the first years they are a lovely bunch and I am glad we now have assigned roles to them so we can really practice for the day.

Being in the gallery is exhaaaaaausting! By 4 o clock I could barely keep my eyes open!!

I certainly learnt a lot. Hans taught me that simple is better. I had definately over complicated the shots I had prepared so I am now going through the actual script trying to keep it simple. I have also had a close look at Have I Got News For You as suggested by Hans.
Reassurance for CAT and STEVE: The cameras don't get to the action immediately always. It's ok to snip the beginning of a sentence. My feeling is we just need to keep calm when changing cameras and less will go wrong. They also had a lot of team shots. Less close ups than 2 shots on the team and the host was always on a mid shot.
They also start the same as we plan to with the end of the title sequence opening up to the high shot of the set which zooms in and then cuts to a mid of the host.

Dog and Gun edit

So everyone seemed happy with the VT for the Dog and Gun.
Still needs tweaking and Simon suggested we do our best to cut it down to 1 minute while it is currently at 1 minute 30.

Also, Simon seemed to get what were going for despite never having seen Cribs so I think that is great!

Here is an episode of Cribs for reference:

Editing

Hello!

I have been working on the Dog and Gun VT this past week. I have a near finished cut. Will has been alongside me during the edit giving me a second set of eyes and advise.
So now I just need to show it to everyone else and see what the verdict is.

I am pretty pleased with it and it was fun. I think it's very Cribs'y.

Easter is over

So back to work. Over the easter holidays the VT's were shot. I attended the shooting at the Fox just to give support! They did fine on their own though! The Dog and Gun seemed like a good shoot though apparently they were down a sound man?

Will and I came along to the studios on the second thursday of the holidays to work in the Gallery for Frank Skinner's Opinionated. I got to put my new found photoshop skills into practice on the graphics and Will liaised with the gallery staff making sure everything was getting to the other side correctly.

Waking up this week for uni came as a bit of a shock but we are back into action. Steve and I began the edit! I am editing the Dog and Gun and the footage is good. The odd bit of discontinuity but otherwise excellent. ! I have been having fun editing to the MTV Cribs style. Lots of speeding up and fast cutting to funky beats.

Unfortunately the gallery day with Hans which was scheduled for today had to be postponed. However I think it has worked out for the best. This week can be concentrated on the edit and next week we have two of these days where we can really get into the gallery stuff before out shoot week!

We contacted CAFT as soon as we got back and have seen some images they have collected for the Twister game. Just waiting for more images of everything else they have done.

As Live: BBC

Today we went to Tunbridge Wells to see the lunch time South East Today broadcast. It was so cool! It was really amazing to see the newsroom where everyone worked as a team to make it happen.

Phil the director showed us around and said their little studio wasn't much and not ideal but I thought it was AWESOME. I loved how it was off the back of the newsroom and you can see the newsroom behind the newsreader on the broadcast. I loved that it was just set up in the back of an office but was fully functional and looked really good!

I also loved how we saw the newsreader editing the headlines before she went on and she discussed changes to script and content with the producer via the talk back when was on set.

Today was a great example for my essay because they almost has to use a standby story when an internet feed from a journalist almost didn't make it in time to air.

Phil explained a lot about how new technologies and methods are effecting the way in which television works such as analog v digital. How they lose libraries of rushes because they are so easy to delete when not needed anymore nad with journalists recording and editing away from the studio on their laptops, the production team often don't see any rushes.

He also explained that the journalists use the internet to feed their VT's over to the studio but because internet connections can waver, sometimes things don't make it or slow right down and cut it really close to going live.

The atmosphere in the gallery was nice and relaxed and they were all friendly and calm.

I would love to go back for work experience as it's a great atmosphere.

Overall, apart from some exasperating rudeness, it was a great day and I really enjoyed the experience!

As Live: Getting Organized

We had an immensely productive day yesterday.

All of us except Troy, whom we couldn't contact, met up at 10am yesterday for a full day of organization at UCA.

We began with twister and got our game heads on, spun Will into tables and set out the rules. We have briefed CAFT on what we need for that game and also told them we will have to for go the second pong set as there just isn't room!

After lunch we met up for a production meeting in the library where we got organized for easter!
We went over the shot list and scripts for the shoots and organized days we could do them. Despite hoping to both be on set for both VT's, Casey and Will's timetables clash but Dylan and I are available to be there too for extra hands on deck!

Dylan put together a contact sheet which we had still been lacking. He also scanned in the shot lists and revised timetable into our google doc account which fits nicely as production schedule along with the google calendar.

Casey managed to get in touch with Dog and Gun folks via facebook and we are still trying to plan a day with them! They are a bit flakey at the moment but hopefully they will be worth it!

Will sorted out the VT shoot with the Fox team for Monday and also booked out the cameras.

I contacted Donna Gray, our favourite for our Barmaid and said that we would like audition her during the week of the 2nd of May. She got in touch very quickly saying she is very available for that day and thinks the project sounds interesting and is fine with no pay!

At about 3.30 Troy unknowingly stumbled upon our production meeting and plonked down to finish his version of a production schedule. After explaining we had been trying to contact him he kindly told us he had lost his phone but will soon have another. Until then he is to regularly check his emails.

We should have everything in place by the time we get back from the holidays. VT's will have been shot. Auditions organized. And hopefully some good feedback from CAFT!

TROY

Where are you? If you see this we have been trying to contact you. Please respond to emails as we can't get through on your phone. Is it broken?

We all met up today to get on with things but obviously you aren't here. And if you don't get in touch you will have to make your own way to Tunbridge Wells tomorrow.

As Live

Having tried to organize the VT shoot at the Fox for tomorrow and failing, we are doing it next week it seems!
Which sucks as it's our holiday but it's got to be done. Only issue is can we have the camera over the break?

Twister will be tried and tested tomorrow along with beer pong and we will be going over scripts and shot lists hopefully!

Looking forward to Thursday!

As Live: Update

On Monday we had our essay tutorials for As Live. I have chosen the News to write about which I find interesting and our trip to Tunbridge Wells on Thursday will be insightful and useful for my essay research.

After our tutorials most of us met up in the library for a mini production meeting. Troy got started on the schedule. After seeing Casey and Will's VT script I said they needed a shot list for the shoot so Will and I printed off a template and began compiling that.

Will went to the Fox again last night to get solid contacts from our team members there. Upon learning I think it would be wise to get the VT for The Fox shot tomorrow before our trip on thurs and before the holidays begin. The sooner we make arrangements the better as it's no good compiling contacts if we don't do anything about it!

Last night I drove a long to collect a twister game (slightly broken) because it seems NO ONE has it anymore. I made the trip so that we could the game test out of the way today but tomorrow was better for everyone.

AS Live: Talent

Will and I had a varied amount of response from our posts on Mandy and CastingCallPro.

I received many Female applicants and Will received many Male applicants.

After showing our findings to the others we all decided that Ant Payne from the Dog and Gun, whom Casey and I found, would be the best for the Landlord role. He has been informed and is happy to partake.

We decided that our favourite contender for the barmaid is Donna Gray who contacted me through castingcallpro.

We need to organize an audition day for her and Ant but need some form of script beforehand or they won't have any material to work with!

We all also discussed audience and teams. Our teams are The Fox and the Dog and Gun. Both confirmed. Dog and Gun contacts lie with Casey and Fox contacts lie with Will. Awaiting confirmation of a day to film VTs.

Casey and Will began a VT script.

I transferred our timetable over to our PubGame Gmail calendar so that we can all access it from home.

As Live and CAFT

Last Thursday Will, Dylan and I made another trip over to CAFT to see our set!

It's fantastic.

They are an extremely productive bunch and we could do with taking a few leaves out of their book.
Seeing it to scale made us realise how little room we will have! Previously we thought it would split down the middle and we would have a bar area on one side and games on the other but the bar area takes up the entire stage. This brings up troubles particularly with Beer Pong. Understandably CAFT made one Beer Pong set and waited for us to see it before making another because there is NO room! So we need to re-test Beer Pong to see how we can make it work with one set.
Do the two teams play at once, taking in turns to throw and seeing who can fill up the most in the time. Or do they play one after the other?

There were a few points they wanted to know.
Will they have access to the scene dock prior to our rigging days so that they can finish off the flats and decor (which would get torn in transit otherwise).

Can they paint the studio floor. No, we discovered.

What do we want our barmaid and landlord to look like.

Logo's of the pubs we have chosen for team tshirts.
Sizes of team members- S, M, L.

Measurements of Landlord and Barmaid.

Scounting for Pubs

Yesterday we had an organizational day with Helen, clearing up what we had to do and plans for the week. We also went through our timetable setting deadlines.

After this we did some research.

Will and I posted casting calls. Will already has an account with mandy.com and I already had one with Castingcallpro so we each made a post.

Will instantly got feedback and I have had 6 responses since yesterday afternoon. All suitable but all for the barmaid role.

Casey and I met up last night to go to the Dog and Gun. Casey had spoken to Leslie?! (think that's her name) the day before about attending the Music Quiz they were having on tuesday. When we got there we went straight to her and she said she had a team in mind so took us over to them. They were already in full swing with the quiz so we chatted with Ant Payne in between rounds. They were serious about the quiz, refusing clues. It would be Ant, Russell and Paul.

Through chatting with him and being introduced to the 2 others that would make up the team for The Pub Game, we discovered they know Geoff at the studios and Kelly, the brunette receptionist! They had also been stand ins on The Door which they didn't enjoy because they were barely used.
Ant Payne also spent a year working there.
We also discovered that Ant has television experience and has done stand up and radio. He was on a show called Blast Off, on Children in Need.
Did radio on CTR (now KMFM). Recently interviewed Greg Davis at the Chortle Awards plus others.

He would like to be considered for the host role but otherwise a team member with Russell and Paul who are equally decent characters. He has contacts for other potential team members and also said something about Tim Vine!?

As Live

So now that Fiction is handed in our minds are focussed on As Live 99%... Essays are also due soon.

After the hand in on Monday we divvied up some roles and made our plans for the day. Me, Dylan, Will and Steve headed over to the Fox to talk to their landlady. She was very enthusiastic and said that there are some great characters in her pool teams who are both in next monday. We left her with some details and said we would come back then.

While we there Casey called round some other pubs and Troy was working on questions and presenters.

We then headed to Steve's house with a camera to try out our Beer Pong game. It was great fun but we have a few kinks to adjust. We realised that the game has to be timed rather than just reliant on the yard of ale being filled up. Also, we were using small plastic white cups which looked rubbish on camera and also were too small which made it difficult to win. I think glasses would look much better on camera but we tried 3 different types of glasses and they were equally as hard to win with. Casey and I discussed those clear large cups last night?!

Studio/Gallery Day

Today was my first experience as Studio Director. Oh.My.God. It is HARD!
And Stressful!

I hope the experience is easier and more enjoyable when we have everything planned out and scripted and I hope I get better at making on the spot decisions.

Decisiveness has always been an issue for me, something that has affected my projects on this course too. So I hope I can manage!

More practice would help a lot!

It was a fantastic day, though it made me incredibly nervous for my role on the day, and we learned a lot.
... Is learnt a word?! Blogger is correcting me and I could have sworn it was a word!

Anyways... Bring on the coming weeks! I will be researching by watching game shows for shot and lighting ideas.

My "Jam" Pitch Document

As Live Update

Yesterday we found out our production roles. I discovered that I am researcher, Director and VT Editor! Exciting! I am glad that I have an editing role as well as an exciting on the day role. I look forward to Thursday with Hans to learn about the Gallery.

We also got a few drawings and ideas from CAFT! They are looking good and it's a good way of us knowing what we can ask for. I would really like some of you guys' thoughts on the images they sent us so I can get back to them with more ideas?

Games wise we have decided what we are doing for the games so we just need to test them now and brush up the flaws and loopholes. Then we can commission CAFT to make them!

This week our main focus is still contributors.
