This was a lovely film.
I won't say much about it but I wouldn't be surprised if it is up for a sound related award next year.

Media World: Charlie
Here's a new video from Charlie McDonnell. It's a scary science one. No graphics but the information is really interesting, especially the memory bit.

I am posting this whole video because of the text at the beginning. I reckon it was easy to do but I love how he walks in front of it. And it would have had to have been framed so that the text could be in the centre and have it work so well.
Don't bother watching the whole thing, it's pretty boring but the song's pretty I guess.

Media World: SKET
Sket is a new film coming out this weekend. Written and directed by Nirpal Bhogal. I know Nirpal from working on Jack the Ripper and he was very inspiring. So I have been following his progress on Sket via his personal facebook page and the page set up for Sket.
The reason I am blogging about this is because I thought the facebook campaign for this film was very good and effective and a great example of how big a part social networking plays in todays media world.

The Sket page was updated regularly throughout the production, giving it's fans behind the scenes information and photographs and releasing a variety of posters which the fans could vote for. I just thought it was really affective and worth a blog.

Major Project Unit: Inspiration and Research
What I really want to do for my series is a how to guide. I am not 100% sure what kind of how to I want to do but on Friday the brainstorming was focussed on cooking and I really like all the ideas that came from it. I will upload more on that later.
My inspiration is charlieissocoollike. His videos are witty, informative, fun and interesting and he is a vlogger. Not just any vlogger though, he started by making videos about "How to be English" and was a hit with America. Since then he has been on Doctor Who Confidential, he got Stephen Fry to narrate his closing titles on his videos, he has a successful band called the Chameleon Circuit, those of you who are Doctor Who fans can probably guess that all the songs are about Doctor Who just from the name. They are really clever though.
Anyway, he is my main inspiration for this unit because the current style of his videos is so slick and he combines clever editing with animations and graphics to create interesting videos. He is also an online success which is key for this unit being that it's meant to be online, watchable and downloadable. I also love the humour, it is exactly my sense of humour. He has touched upon how to in the past:
He uses alot of match-on-action (I don't know if I can use that term to describe how he jumps up into another room or turns his head into another scene but it seems right).
He has also started doing Fun Science where he basically just talks about certain topics. Below is his video on sound. (He doesn't always sing his videos). I love his use of animation and would definitely like to include animations and graphics in my series.

The Big Bang
I am just watching the first episode of Catastrophe on 4od. A series about the natural disasters of Earth. The first ep is about "The Birth of the Planet". And Tony Robinson was talking about the Big Bang. One of Earth's greatest catastrophes. Two planets collided. Etc.
Then he says:
"The Earth faces it's first and greatest disaster, an impact of Biblical proportions".
BIBLICAL!?
Is that not a blatant dig AT the bible and it's denial of evolution!?
Go team science!

Daytime Bottom
Just watching television and there was an advert for The Model Agency which showed a bum and women in underwear. I didn't realise that was allowed on daytime tv. Never really thought about it before to be honest but there ya go!

Books
I went to the library a couple of weeks ago to begin the knowledge collection and I thought I would share some potential good reads for y'all. (not while I have them though *evil laugh*). Also after getting the reading lists I saw that some of these aren't on there so more reason to share.
Firstly, "Literature and Film" edited by Robert Stam and Alessandra Raengo. This is about the theory and practice of film adaption and is very hard to read. However, I shall keep trying as I haven't come across the 'practice' part yet.
"Adaptations" edited by Deborah Cartmell and Imelda Whelehan is a much easier read and I understand it! So I recommend this one. I finished a whole chapter!
I juuust opened this one which spurred me to write this blog.
"Live TV- An Inside look at Directing and Producing" Tony Verna. This book is a bit dated *cough* 1987 *cough*.... But... It contains interviews with what was then the top live tv producers and directors so I think it will be interesting. I have found in the past that interviews are always the most informative sources. My A Level coursework benefited a great deal from Jackson Pollock/ Art historian interviews.
So we shall see! I intend on going to the library tomorrow to check out some of those journals. Something I didn't even consider last term!

Baking TV

I was just browsing iPlayer and found this:

Thinking back to a conversation with Helen today. I said if I did a cooking show it would be all baking (or chocolate). Well! The BBC have done baking. Hosted by a MODEL. It's quick, funky, flash, modern. Poppy chart music. Swanky out of focus shots and over elaborated shots of the finished food.
It's like they went "we need to make a modern cooking show". And they pulled EVERY trick out of the book. And to watch... It's annoying, obvious and over compensating. But also yummy...

Last week I went to a career's event at the Hazlitt Theatre. There was lots of free food and information that was irrelevant to me.
But there was a talk about film. It was meant to be about filming locally!? Which it wasn't at all. It was very interesting though.
Elaine Wickham, a film producer, from Screen South gave the talk and basically said if we want to be directors. GOOD LUCK. It's hard. And to start making shorts immediately.
She was studying to become a cinematographer but realised she was really good at producing so now she does that. She explained her role and that she basically finds money. And she explained that what people look for on a pitch is the director, the actor and the story and all have to be top notch or it will be turned away.
She also explained the huge importance of the director knowing what they are doing and mentioned Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank) who sounds really inspiring. She said that she made shorts for years and years and took one (Wasp) to sundance or something and it got noticed and she won an oscar for it and as soon as that happened her career spiralled upwards. Because she is a very talented Auteur (don't know if that's right) director and that it is rare to find auteur directors because the studio's and producers usually take the reigns after it's all shot. She also said that Andrea (and many directors) hate producers having been told "you are a necessary evil" by Andrea.
Elaine mentioned a lot of things I already know (but no one else seemed to). Like the Roles in the industry. Like the fact that 1st AD is a career in itself and not a step towards being a director. That people aren't always a cable basher or clapper loader to get higher in the ranks but because that is their career. That you can't go up the step ladder to become a director, you have to direct immediately.
Elaine also illustrated the industry to us. Saying it's a hierarchy. She said you make your way up the hierarchy to get recognized. Then once you are recognized it's like you have been accepted into the "club" in which there is a new hierarchy and so you have to start over again to make your way up THAT hierarchy.
