Superseed: Reviewing Footage.

Having reviewed our Dartford footage some things have to light.

- Radio mic needs to be -20db instead of -10db. Although we had tested the levels and found they weren't peaking, the sound on the footage is a bit fuzzy. We have the directional mic sound also but we should be able to get good radio mic sound. The radio mic only shows when peaking on the pack attached to the speaker. A way to monitor the sound better would be good but not possible with the 7D. The only better way to do this is with the Sony.

- 7D must ALWAYS be on the sticks. I shot some GV's and a couple super close ups off the sticks and they are shaky or out of focus. It's extremely difficult to check if you are in focus when handheld because unless you are shooting at eye level you have to crouch down to check the screen which can result in the shot changing anyway. A monitor would help with this. But for our shoots we will stay on the sticks. A mini tripod or monopod would help with this because there were some shots that simply wouldn't have been possible with the manfrotto tripod.

- As we were leaving the alotments I took some general shots of the area and because I felt more like a photographer I kept flipping the camera to portrait!!! Which I mustn't do. I didn't even consider this when were set up and filming in the original area so I must have had a different hat on.

- It was also difficult to get our contributor to repeat a point he had made for a shot change so Will is going to take notes for our next shoot so that we can easily remind them of their point that we need repeated.

I personally prefer the shots small. They look soo good in iphoto and on the camera but when you watch them full screen they look a bit soft and over exposed. It's hard to say "I will shoot darker" next time because if it looks too dark on the screen I will probably adjust it. Perhaps there's some theory I can find to help me with this. I used the 10x zoom and focussed properly, the way you are meant to but when you enlarge the footage it looks slightly soft. I am confident I ticked the boxes in camera operating but perhaps there are some tricks I can learn to better the end results.

I am glad the footage is FOR web use which is small size but I am aware this will be viewed on a large screen for our end of degree show.

  1. Handheld always tricky but particularly with a light weight camera. Always use with caution and plan as you have quite rightly said. Also the director/producer on the shoot should be writing down possible pick up sequences and questions which need asking again - take inspiration from the responses you get to questions for potential sequences and actuality. Sounds like you are all working very hard on this and doing a lot of research which is excellent.
