Fringe

WATCH IT!

I am extremely addicted to this programme at the moment. Created by J.J. Abrams (creator of Lost) the fascinating subject matter is an immediate hook. It's about crimes and conspiracies involving fringe science. Things like teleportation, invisibility, etc... That probably makes it sound like another super hero programme but it isn't at all! It puts these things in a more realistic and believable setting. Things go wrong, people die, planes crash.

On top of the immense subject matter (crime and crazy science- what more could you want?) you have comical characters. My favourite- Walter Bishop played by John Noble. He spent 17 years in a mental hospital after a failed fringe science experiment and is taken out by his son Peter to help Agent Dunham solve the mysteries surrounding a lot of the science Walter worked on. The comical interactions between Walter and Peter are gold. And his character in general is wacky and quirky and generally amusing.

As you can imagine the way the plot is laid across the series is very much like Lost, with questions left unanswered, keeping you on the edge with dramatic filming. One criticism is the repetitive use of a very tacky like effect which is used whenever something surreal or dramatic happens.

I can't stop watching it. I love Walter! He is amazing.

  1. i saw 3 eps of this on a plane going to LA and was hooked... then strangely I saw John Noble in LA! in a cafe!
Haven't managed to catch it since, but thought it was a more mature slant on the whole x-files genre. good to have a strong female lead too.
