I have only seen some of the U.S version of this show. The style featured very muted tones, lots of greys and blues (that's the overall impression I got from the series as a whole). I like the distinctive style but I don't want Roy Grace's world to be so miserable.
At the same time I don't really want the bright real tones of shows like Touch of Frost and Inspector Morse. Perhaps though they are brighter because they are slightly more grainy due to lack of HD?
I haven't seen Prime Suspect but from stills on google it looks more towards the grand side than gritty and has enigmatic lighting.
I imagine my Roy Grace series to be almost real but very slightly darker and grittier than reality. Though not depressing and grey. I see the everyday processes being closer to reality than the crime scenes and criminal aspect which I see as being a bit noir. Not full on noir but a bit darker and more stylized. I imagine the actual murders to be quite fast paced in the filming and cutting while the investigation is detailed, interesting and important. Because the perspective changes (detective/ criminal/ victim etc), these perspectives will be filmed in the same style as it makes them all equally everyday people. We won't always immediately know who is the criminal and who is he victim at first so when the crime occurs it will be darker and more shocking. I want him and his life to come across as everyday and routine, they are just going about their jobs, I would think that this would make them more relatable as characters and the crimes more shocking and real to the audience (especially brighton audiences).
